Grainbakers Gingerbread Frosted Peanut Butter Spent Grain Dog Treats

(If you add some extra cane sugar, these are wonderful treats for people!)

First! Contact your favorite brewery using their website contact form. Tell them you’ve seen a recipe on the Grainbaker's webiste for Spent Grain Dog Treats and you’d like to pick up 4-5 pounds of grain to make dog treats.

SAFETY INFORMATION: Once you’ve acquired your grain, you must Freeze it for food safety.
Here are some tips from Grainbakers to keep you safe.

4 cups fresh or frozen Brewer’s Spent Grain BSG

1 cup peanut butter

2 Large eggs

2 cups flour (AP, Bread, GF or Whole Wheat flour)

One tablespoon molasses

¼ teaspoon cinnamon

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Mix Brewer’s Spent Grain and flour evenly. Add egg, molasses, cinnamon and peanut butter. Mix evenly and roll to a THIN 1/4” sheet on a floured surface. Cut the dough into desired shapes using cookie cutters or a pizza roller if you are not using cookie cutters, roll toll the ball in rolled oats before you roll out with a rolling pin!

Place cut treats onto parchment-paper-lined baking sheets and bake for 30 minutes at 350F. Reduce oven heat to 225F, and bake for an additional 2 hours, creating longer-lasting cookies!

Frosting
¼ cup Cornstarch, ¼ cup Water, 2 tsp Honey, ¼ Teaspoon powdered ginger

Place your cornstarch in a small to medium bowl. Add the water a teaspoon or two at a time. When you reach about halfway through the ½ of the ¼ cup of water, stir in the honey. Then, add the remaining water until you reach your desired consistency. This will typically seem a bit thin at first before it hardens. Refrigerate to harden and for best results.

Ginger is safe for dogs in small doses and can be really helpful! It’s packed with antioxidants that support pups dealing with motion sickness, nausea, or an upset stomach. Plus, ginger’s anti-inflammatory properties can help reduce joint swelling and pain.

Now, about hops—yes, we’ve all heard they’re a no-go for dogs. No need to worry, though! The spent grain we use in baking was processed before any hops were added to the brewing process, so it’s completely safe for your furry friend.
